KATHLEEN FERRIER - Che farò senza Euridice ? - Orfeo ed Euridice - GLUCK
"In opera,live recording.
"Che faro senza Euridice?"(What is Life?).
Sung in Italian,1951.
Unique, unmistakeable, great English contralto caught in her prime, live on the opera stage in Amsterdam, Holland, singing the lead in Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice. All of the opera performance is riveting, and only found in the archives many years later by the producer of these 1951 recordings, Klaas A.Posthuma.
A few weeks after these performances, she was diagnosed with the illness which caused her death in 1953, aged 41.
She was widely loved in Holland. It was her first overseas destination,1947, following World War 2. She also toured many European countries. The USA and Canada(coast to coast) were visited twice, but the third tour was cancelled due to illness.
PHOTOGRAPH:-As Orfeo in her 1953 performance at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London. These were her last public performances. She was admitted again to hospital the day after the second night at Covent Garden. She had fractured her hip on stage the night before."
